Q: Does it cost to try out for more than one age group?
A: Yes, the tryout cost is $20 per age group, but that cost covers both days of that age group's tryout sessions.
Q: If we are trying out for another club and may be late for tryouts, is it still worth attending?
A: If you can make it to our tryouts no more than 30 minutes late, we would suggest you still try to give it a shot!
Q: Who will be responsible for evaluations of each age group at tryouts?
A: The coaches coaching in that age group will be the primary evaluators and the coaches coaching at the age groups one above and one below will also provide evaluation input. Other coaches in the club may help conduct the tryout sessions, but would not be actually evaluating players.
Q: At another club, I tried out at one age group, but was offered a position an age group higher - could that happen with AiR CiTY CHiCKS?
A: If this is something we would like to propose to you, we will ask if you would be interested in playing "up" before simply making that decision.
Q: At tryouts, what position should a player tryout for?
A: On the registration form you will be able to designate your primary and secondary position. If you don't know, you can indicate that, too!
Q: Will the registration form have a place to indicate what level you want to play for - National American Regional?
A: Yes, when you register online, you will be able to select one of those levels or indicate you don't know which level or that "any" level is of interest.
Q: If I am offered a spot on a National team, but cannot take that spot, will I still make an American or Regional team?
A: Yes - if you are offered a National team spot, but for financial or other sport reasons cannot play on a National team, you will likely be offered a position on the 2nd team in that age group.
Q: Will you offer the player clinics that have been offered in the past?
A: Yes! We have four clinics scheduled this year - one in December, two in January and one in February. They will be open to ANY boys or girls in grades 4 through 8 (these are not just open to our club players, but to anyone!) Registration for these sessions will begin in late November.
Q: Will there also be the individual "skill" sessions that were offered in the past?
A: We do not currently have plans to offer individual skill sessions; however, I am working with Kettering Sports Medicine to offer some strength, agility and conditioning sessions during the winter months. More information will be available to players who are selected for the CHiCKS.
Q: Where are the AAU/JVA Nationals held?
A: Now that JVA has merged with AAU, their National Tournament will continue to be held in Orlando at the Disney Sports Complex.
Q: Typically where are regional level tournaments played?
A: Many of the tournaments our regional teams will play in are right here in the Dayton area. Some are in Oxford, Piqua, Lima, Cincinnati and other communities that are within a two-hour drive of Dayton.
Q: Do teams have to qualify for JVA Nationals?
A: No, JVA Nationals is "pay to play."
Q: Will AiR CiTY CHiCKS participate in any qualifiers for the older age groups, just to get that experience?
A: Some of our older age group PiNK teams will be given the option to compete in the MEQ or Ohio Bid Tournament.
Q: Will players be moved (from team to team) after practices have started?
A: Players will not be moved from one team to another, but if coaches in an age group remain "undecided" about whether certain players are on the 1st or 2nd team and final decisions won't be made until a couple practices have occurred, you will be notified of this when you get your offer call.
Q: I understand that a "grade level" player can play "down" an age group with her classmates, but could a player also play "up" (if she is younger in her grade)?
A: Yes, players may tryout for an age group one higher than the one their birthdate places them in.
Q: What is the difference between National, American and Regional teams?
A: National teams offer competition at the highest level, most tournaments are multi-day events and may require a little more travel. Regional teams play in primarily one-day tournament events that are closer to home. The American division is available in the OVR this year at 13s, 14s, 15s, 16s and 17s - this division is expected to be a little more competitive than the Regional divsion, but not quite as demanding as the National division. The American division will be offered in OVR events only - outside the region, teams will have to play in National/Open or Regional/Club divisions.
Q: Are you offering an practice time prior to tryouts?
A: No, due to the restrictions on conducting open gyms for all players, we will not be offering any pre-tryout sessions.
Q: Are you going to have separate tryouts for the different levels (regional and national)?
A: No, tryouts will be held for EACH age group and all levels will be evaluated during that time.
Q: We are coming from pretty far away, if we make the program, will you provide contact information for other players so that we might be able to form car pools?
A: Once teams are determined, rosters and phone chains will be made available.
Q: Are coaches travel expenses included in the club fees?
A: No, this would be an additional cost to you. Teams would be responsible for funding coaches' travel costs. This is a pretty standard practice in club volleyball.
Q: When you extend an invitation to a player, will you include what position the player will be playing?
A: Some coaches may be able to provide you with that information when they call with your invitation. Please feel free to inquire and if the coach can confirm this with you, she/he will! We don't want to tell you one thing and then, once we get into practices, decide that a player would be better suited in a different position.
Q: How soon will players be notified after tryouts?
A: Some offers will be made on-site at the end of the first day of tryouts, other offers will be made on-site at the end of the second day of tryouts; and, finally, remaining offers will be made via cell phone call within 24 hours after final tryout for an age group. Tryouts #s of "offered" players, "wait list" players, and "non-offered" players will be posted on our website within 72 hours of the conclusion of tryouts for each age group.
Q: How many teams are you going to offer for each age group?
A: We hope to have two teams at 12s, 16s and 17s; three teams at 13s, 14s and 15s; and at least one team at 18s. Logistically, we can support 16 teams this year.
Q: If a player tries out up an age group, can she just attend that age group's tryout?
A: Yes, but we would strongly encourage her to also attend her own age group's tryout just in case she does not make the higher age group.
Q: Are you going to offer any fundraisers this year?
A: We will have some fundraising opportunities available and details will be provided once teams are selected. Any fundraising monies earned will be given back to individual teams/players to use to your coaches' expense or your own travel costs.
Q: Is there a chance that you might have two Regional teams in an age group and no National teams?
A: Sure. The number and level of teams we are going to field will be based on the number of players who tryout, the level of talent in an age group and the level of commitment players are willing to make (to play at a National level).
Q: How many games (tournaments) will teams play?
A: 12-and-under teams will play in 4 one-day tournaments and the OVR Championships. Regional level teams will play in 4 one-day events, 1 two-day event, and the OVR Championships. American level teams will play in 3 one-day events, 4 two-day events, the OVR Championships and the ASICS National Championships in Chicago. National level teams will play in 1 one-day event, two-day events, the MEQ or Ohio Bid Tournament, the OVR Championships, and the ASICS National Championships in Chicago. If American or National teams choose to play in JVA/AAU Nationals in Orlando instead of the ASICS tourney, players will be charged an additional $30 for the increased entry fees. The top teams in each age group should expect to play in one of the aforementioned nationals' events at the end of the season.
Q: How far will National Teams travel to play?
A: We are planning to keep the majority of our travel within 2-3 hours from Dayton. Cincy, Columbus, Toledo, Indianapolis, Louisville, etc. We feel like we have a lot of great volleyball right in our own backyard. There are, however, a couple of great OVR "challenge" tournaments that are held up in northeast Ohio every year and some teams may participate in those.
Q: Will both coaches attend practices?
A: Yes, that is our intent. There may be extenuating circumstances where a coach may miss a practice, but this would NOT be the norm and should not be happening on a regular basis!
Q: Are you going to offer "practice player" opportunities this year?
A: The decision to include practice players will be left up to individual coaches and would only be considered on Regional level teams.
Q: Are you going to allow coaches to coach their own child?
A: No, our policy does not permit a parent to coach his/her own child. However, we do have a number of coaches who have girls trying out for the club, but they will not be assigned to coach their daughter's team.
